AVOIDING SOFTWARE INSANITY - IT'S ALL ABOUT THE ARCHITECTURE!

In an experience report on the benefits of object-orientation for OOPSLA ‘92, Ward Cunningham observed:

“Although immature code may work fine and be completely acceptable to the customer, excess quantities will make a program unmasterable, leading to extreme specialization of programmers and finally an inflexible product. Shipping first time code is like going into debt. A little debt speeds development so long as it is paid back promptly with a rewrite. Objects make the cost of this transaction tolerable. The danger occurs when the debt is not repaid. Every minute spent on not-quite-right code counts as interest on that debt.”

Most non-trivial software systems suffer from technical debt, and this burden acts like an ever-increasing tax on every code change or new feature. The cost of change is growing faster than the code base, and little is being done to address this problem.

Please join DetroitDevDays and the Pattern Enabled Development Group in welcoming Alexander von Zitzewitz to share why this problem is so difficult to solve and potential solutions that have a high return on investment.

The goal of DetroitDevDays is to build a software developer community in the Detroit area that is regarded as the best in the world.

DevDays are targeted at software developers and architects. DevDays educate and unite the development community in the Metro Detroit Area with inclusive, accessible and affordable events and conferences. The cost to attend DevDay events is kept as low as possible, so developers of all pay scales can afford a ticket. DevDay attendees represent companies such as Compuware, GM, Ford, Chrysler, ePrize, iDashboards, Comerica Banks, Flagstar Banks, Microsoft, Quicken Loans and more. There are also a number of students and professors that attend from Wayne State University, U of M and MSU. DevDay attendees are developers and architects that are passionate enough about what they do to spend their time outside of work absorbing new technologies and networking with like minded professionals. Many in our area are not in a position to attend conferences in California, Las Vegas or New York so DevDays are way to bring great speakers and workshops to our area.
